My First-Year Chinese teacher during my second year at U of C, Professor Chao (but "really" it's Zhao4; he's from a Beijing family that escaped to Taiwan, where he grew up and lived for much of his life), recently retired, did not merely offer some words and patters for YOUR study and review. He did not accept mutual comprehensibility as his standard for learning. He DEMANDED excellent Beijing-style Putonghua from ALL students, even the ones who started off with Chinese backgrouds and mistakenly believed that would mean this would therefor be a breeze of a class. To prosper in his class, you had to enter a Chinese cultural realm, and if you pretended you were in America... those kids tended to find him officious and unbearable. My heart holds a special place for that man, and I hope to have the opportunity to catch up with him one of these months.
Which perhaps contributed to my excessive exhuberance 2 months ago when I found out the woman I was in the midst of a blind date with, who had many other attractive characteristics going for her as well, was a fellow "Zhao disciple" (to the extent that she did not object when I used such strong language)! I said too much, and I think she may have heard some kind of bad rumor, and ... there was no second date. Oh well.

Prof. Mary Carskadon at Brown did a spectacular job mentoring me for my Westinghouse (now Intel) Science Talent Search entry (as did great Stuy teachers like Mr. Farbstein).
She had me compose a questionaire survey on sleep habits and a questionaire survey on physical maturation, and then I got a four schools to have their Jr. Chai students distribute the surveys, and, with the extensive help of my grandmother&mom, compiled the data for statistical analysis, which btw confirmed that physical maturation correlates with eveningness (a propensity to sleep and wake later).
The kids at the religious school where I had attended kindergarten with DW dutifully answered all questions, no problem. The kids at the school that some of my hebrew school (i.e., as a supplement to secular school) classmates came from ... wrote things like "Die Pervert!")
This was while at the Brown HS Summer program (with kinder-yeshiva inner circle member DW, hs classmate MR, other kewl kids J,R,&S,DF,some others, a bodybuilder roommate for/with whom I composed the answering machine jingle "'eh yo I'm Charlie Cho' 'and I'm MattJaaaay...' 'and we can't make it to the PHOne today', so wontcha, leave a message, at the tone, and we won't have, 2 pick a BONE!' (human beatbox)", and an al-Sabah). My Formal Logic prof sported dreadlocks and wore a Goo-Goo dolls shirt every day (and this was 1991) and was an excellent teacher, and my International Relations prof was pretty kewl too, and I got an A on my final, a Marxist analysis of Gulf I, as well as for the classes, and semi-finalist in the W(now I)STS.

When I have presented "What is Napoleon Hill Philosophy?" to small groups, I have tended to emphasize the clarity of mind, and procedures and benefits surrounding that. What may merit more explicit clarification is the significance, after the Vision is Observed, of Kindling those few sparks of Observation-meets-Possibility-meets-desired-Objectives (you've INVOLUNTARILY recast u'r minds i and found it's an Op forwards AND backwards, [so you kindle them{being generous with the reader can go too far. that's like the floor dropping out from underyou when you just want to walk across the book...}again you can {hey how did you know...} KINDLE THEM]) into a small flame on the kindling wood (read "index cards", you hipster-PDA holding Getting Things Done afficianados out there), and ... then bringing the baby and then child flame to the bigger sticks of .... Is the Akeda ("sacrifice" of the child) meant to suggest facilitating the child's independent adulthood, and progressively relinquishing parental authority over him? ... a teen then adult project ... through writing up plans, talking to people, raising funds, etc., then hiring, running the biz, perhaps now answerable to a more rationalized board, and perhaps new demands for social conformity? .... and you've got to take those tiny spar ... spermarks ...and not let them drop into a bucket or out ur imagination's (depreciating) drainpipes but rather ... You Want ... to kindle this fire. You'll FIGHT TO DEFEND this fire from those who do not regard it as worth maintaining , and you'll keep yourself constantly on guard at the natural challenges of wind, rain, etc., knowing that the COSTS are going to add up ... perhaps exponentially, as debt, AND ... the most appreciation you'll get for it is "just doing your job" and the least is ... rather less favorable ... and you yet you choose, from that nastily pleasurable spermarktake on this challenge ("no gap").
Yeah and people have a really hard time with someone who's happy and motivated AND has good reasons for being so. Some of your clients and even (especially) prospective partners may tend to take the "kicking the tires" thing rather far! And the way to not let this phenomenon phase you is to (1) expect it, and (2) understand that YOU ARE NO BETTER IN THIS REGARD AND OFTEN WORSE YOU HIGHLY INTELLECTUAL AND JUDGMENTAL WORMDOG, so ... chill... stay focused AND chill and proceed in PMA. And if after all this introspection it is indeed THEM who are wontonly kicking at the tires, recklessly and without respect for the interests of others, what are the most suitable, and then cost-effective, means to bring this matter to a resolution.
And at the same time, you also keep in your mind (by explicitly reminding yourself and giving it at least several seconds of consideration) that you may have an Emergency Situation or a Physical Fight or Flight situation on your hands BOOM out of nowwhere anytime anywhere, and you must train your mind to respond to at least the most predictable forms of emergencies, by Molting into a POSITION of BALANCE (mentally and otherwise) such that you instantly say to yourself "OK, I am in an eMergency: OODAloops-" This is MUCH better than the average person's "Huh?!" or "AAAAH AAAAH!!!" or "Get me out of here!" You should be sure to practise the psychological emergency response for at least a Moment every morning.
And after you get into this habit you will be able to discern who among the people around you is awake and who is more zombielike.

Hello esteemed readers! Perhaps you did not realize we are in the movie biz? Well some pros and intimates know, but this is surely news to some. We will release a high-end Hollywood production, and I will not be disappointed if it takes a few *years* for this, tentatively called “Napoleon Lives”... not about about the diminutive and high-achieving French executive, but rather about the rebirth of Napoleon Hill as a sububerhero “AMm” who will save the world. But as our Chinese friends say “Da Chu Zhuo Yan; Xiao Chu Zhuo Shou ,” which is just their way of saying “Think Globally; Act Locally”*, so we need to grab this year's Ymas season by the jollies, and that's just TWO MONTHS away, so we better get snap crackle and pooping on the emerging global BLOCKbuster (if by Who's in for what? * At a recent party in Shanghai, one guest was honored by another with the “Greatest-Ever Abuse of the Slogan 'Think Globally Act Locally' Award”, after he used it to justify his engagement in frivolous intimacy despite his desire to find a serious long-term relationship, perhaps because his Chinese was too good.

Walid Shoebat's speech having been Columbiated, I was left to work through the rainstorm in Starbucks, seated here two tables from the window. When the gorgeous and classy blonde woman siting alone in front of me at the table facing the window blessed my sneezes, and I asked her if she was enjoying the (foggy window) view, she said it was like looking into the clouds. Since she would not share her personal cloudreadings with me, I just asked her to let me know if she found any messages for the world there, and she made the same request of me. Aha! I went and drew the omloops on the window. She said it looked like a rejected pretzel! (Fantastic!) And when I mentioned the paperclips, she brought up the paperclip guy (the guy who started with one big red paper clip and traded it up until he got a house!), who apparently is getting movie and book deals! Deborah was very sweet in conversation too, and before her partners came, she promised to get in touch with me :)

You may find my concerns peripheral. Or perhaps I am being asked to agree to terms that may be stated a bit too broadly, and you would find surprising harmony in my views if your concerns were expressed in the right terms. Here's the bigger pic, as I can c it: Imho, the NYTimes, CNN, and the Academy need the interventions they are in the process of receiving. In our two-party system it's the Democrats' job to right Republican errors and excesses, and when they had the opportunity, their alternative was a man who opposed Gulf 1, whose position on Iranian nukes was merely that threatening Iran does not help, and who pitched himself as a soldier reporting for duty on the basis of his Vietnam experience while the highlight of such was his public lambasting of his fellow American soldiers as Genghis-Khan-like maniacs. When MMoore's F911 came out, we saw the good people around saying "Aha, got 'em!" who would indulge the lies and innuendos of a fat-white-male-excoriating fat white male who claims "There is No Terrorist Threat" in their eagerness to have it be Bush's fault. (If only!) I still have cool, nice, smart friends coming to me with their partial (or more) belief in the credibility of various 9/11 conspiracy theories, and witness demonstrations for such when I visit my brother in Union Square. I think they need interventions, but they're not getting 'em. [I have had reasonable success sharing Occam's Razor with friends.] Even the US (let alone more Vichy parts of the world) is in a Britain '30s consciousness, awaiting "Peace in Our Time", and shouting down the Churchills among us, as the Brits did. The Enemy is neither "the Muslims" nor "the Nazis"; it is the scumbags I never said Bush IS solving (or can solve!) these problems. I can understand a good deal of frustration with Bush, and the other day I forwarded the NYTimes editorial on Bush's countless failings. Yet with all the hate (I was in NYC for 9/11) and de Nile around, I generally feel more compelled to defend than to cut and run. More than that, however, I feel compelled to tell it like it is, and unify people around better, and non-partisan (third party, even!) solutions to the problems we face together. And imho a spiritual renewal of OUR society (and theirs) is part of the elegant dignified alternative (or complement) to the military solution. This is the kind of thing a good Democratic Party should be aiming for, but their lack of credibility (and ideas) and BDS overwhelm them. Thats why even (gay?) Jewish LibDems like Ed Koch are with me. Are the facts kept secret from him? Is he paranoid because he's a Jew? They would never have let me know in school that the author of "A World Without Jews" was not Hitler ... indeed the book was written in the late 19th century ... by that grandson of rabbis, Karl Marx! The world has a Jewish problem! And now it's in a river in Egypt. And just because we're paranoid doesn't mean we do not have headchopping maniacs (and their intimidated collaborators) after us. MJ is a formulation that may suggest to more people what personal fulfillment, mental focus, and indeed power and influence (soft power, ideally) the Torah teaches. MJ offers more room for the perplexed naďve adult who does not want to be drawn away from his family and society as he re-connects with and explores the lessons of our heritage. (While some adult Jewish learning institutions may seek to shove the curious prospective Bal Teshuva to black hat married with 12 kids in Israel posthaste, Rabbi Shalom says the Rebbe says that in accordance with the principles outlined by the Bal Shem Tov, the purpose of our activities is not to take you away from your family and society, but to offer a path to greater access to the spirituality and depth available in life and help you be a better Jew wherever you are.) Martial Judaism may help forge new bonds across the bland spectrum of greater-lesser observance, political conservatism-liberalism, etc., and may resonate with a plurality of Jews, as well as with the global philosemite. You can't put a grocery list through that many translations, copies, and re-telling, and not expect to have some big changes in the dinner menu when the kids make it back from Kroger's.
